It will never happen so i'm not bothered.

Are you sure?

Is this just a coincidence then?

The education minister said after-school care should be regarded not only “as an add-on but as an integral part of the school day”. She said: “It’s a completely different mindset.” Ms Truss said she hoped to see more highly qualified graduates entering teaching as the profession was regarded with more prestige.

Yeah, because loads of high quality graduates go into childcare.

Ms Truss suggested that teachers may want to rearrange their day so they can oversee after-school clubs.

I'm sure they won't!

I wouldn't say I'm jealous, pissed off with the inference that I'm a shit mum and my dc have a shit childhood because I work when that's really not the case, would be a more accurate description of how I feel.

And I expect this will happen, the dc even had a talk about it in assembly today. And I'm glad I think the gov will save thousands and thousands of pounds Off the childcare allowance out of tax credits which I hope goes towards the funding of this.

Nobody has said that Back Hmm

You've made the right decision for you and your family but there's no reason to assume it is right for every child and every family and impose it on the against their will.

What on earth did they say in assembly about it?

I cant be bothered to go and copy and posts...

Dd just said the head teacher said maybe soon school won't be over till 6 o'clock and what a brilliant idea it was. Then they all had a vote teachers as well and nearly everyone voted it was a good idea.

Well, apparently Gove's terrible idea to increase the school day and decrease school holidays has been rejected. Grin Hooray!

Rejected by whom?

I can't find anything on the news.

Report
TamerB · 15/02/2014 08:18

It would have to be rejected- they haven't got the staff or the means to pay for them.

I think it is a brilliant idea to have the ability for children to have an extended school day. After school care is patchy and often far from ideal. It shouldn't be compulsory but it could be really beneficial for children and working parents who get such a raw deal currently.

Report
TamerB · 17/02/2014 06:59

It isn't being proposed as 'care for working parents' .

I am so glad my youngest dd is in year 10 and we only have 16 months left of school

It is turning into institutional education

"I think it is a brilliant idea to have the ability for children to have an extended school day."

Many schools already offer this through clubs.

"After school care is patchy and often far from ideal."

Why should schools and teachers pick up the slack?

"It shouldn't be compulsory"

Then use what we already have.

"but it could be really beneficial for children"

If you could find some research proving that it would be great.

"and working parents who get such a raw deal currently."

This what it really boils down to, cheap child care.

Cheap childcare is what some parents want but the proposal is nothing to do with that- and it can't possibly be cheap!

I'm a teacher - I'm already out of the house for 10 / 11 hours a day. Longer days would cripple me.

LynetteScavo · 17/02/2014 08:24

So I would get free child care? Whohoo! Our family will be about £2k a year better off.

But it's a stupid, ridiculous idea, and not one id like to see implemented.

I'm sure most of the mums against this is because their rich banker/lawyer husbands will want to know why they can't get a job and pull their financial weight with no dc till 6

or maybe they'd like to see and spend time with their children?

Report
TamerB · 17/02/2014 09:58

I suspect the jobless wife of the rich banker has a nanny anyway!

If give extended teachers' working day so they were teaching from 8-6, would this actually be free for parents?
