I think this is part of a bigger picture of the constant pressure that our children are being put under by schools and society in general. I recommend reading Carl Honore's book 'Under Pressure' which gives in insightful view on this whole business.

Also, if anyone fancies doing a guest post at my blog on your views on the pressures our children are being put under by schools and the Government please contact me. I think there is a real debate to have about this!!

It'll be dorms with bunks for teachers to sleep in next-self funded, obviously ;)

You have forgotten that the teachers won't leave till at least 18:20 due to bus duty and that they may not be able to leave till 19:15 due to meetings.

Then, if teacher one collects their own child from teacher 2 at 6.30, teacher two can collect their own child from teacher 3 at 7pm and so on. It'll work like a dream!

Teachers who are parents will have to have After After school care to give them time to ensure all their class are collected (allowing a good 30/40 minutes after 6pm for working parents to collect their children-trains aren't always reliable, you know) and to get to their children's school to collect them from their teacher.

If give extended teachers' working day so they were teaching from 8-6, would this actually be free for parents?

I suspect the jobless wife of the rich banker has a nanny anyway!

BobPatSamandIgglePiggle · 17/02/2014 09:38

I'm sure most of the mums against this is because their rich banker/lawyer husbands will want to know why they can't get a job and pull their financial weight with no dc till 6

or maybe they'd like to see and spend time with their children?

So I would get free child care? Whohoo! Our family will be about £2k a year better off.

But it's a stupid, ridiculous idea, and not one id like to see implemented.

I'm a teacher - I'm already out of the house for 10 / 11 hours a day. Longer days would cripple me.

Cheap childcare is what some parents want but the proposal is nothing to do with that- and it can't possibly be cheap!

"I think it is a brilliant idea to have the ability for children to have an extended school day."

Many schools already offer this through clubs.

"After school care is patchy and often far from ideal."

Why should schools and teachers pick up the slack?

"It shouldn't be compulsory"

Then use what we already have.

"but it could be really beneficial for children"

If you could find some research proving that it would be great.

"and working parents who get such a raw deal currently."

This what it really boils down to, cheap child care.

I am so glad my youngest dd is in year 10 and we only have 16 months left of school

It is turning into institutional education

It isn't being proposed as 'care for working parents' .

It would have to be rejected- they haven't got the staff or the means to pay for them.

Rejected by whom?

I can't find anything on the news.

Well, apparently Gove's terrible idea to increase the school day and decrease school holidays has been rejected. Grin Hooray!

I cant be bothered to go and copy and posts...

Dd just said the head teacher said maybe soon school won't be over till 6 o'clock and what a brilliant idea it was. Then they all had a vote teachers as well and nearly everyone voted it was a good idea.
