Hi,

Glasgow City Council are proposing to change the parks management rules...I think in reaction to the problems had in the past with social media organised events. However, they are proposing (amongst other things):
-Children over the age of 8 may not use opposite sex toilets;
-that nurseries/ schools may not take children to the park without written permission from the director at the parks dept. and only once a charge has been paid;
-No congregation of more than 20 people without permission;
-No playing group sports (an intended legacy of a commonwealth games city?!?)
-No music;

There's a petition doing the rounds and an email to tell the council what we think. Seems to me a pretty heavy handed reaction to an incident from 3 years ago.....and one which will negatively impact upon everyone. Many inner city nurseries use the parks as many have little/ no outside space. It's not exactly promoting a health lifestyle either! Not the best legacy for a commonwealth games city!

If you agree this proposal is not what's needed there's an email address to the council directly and a petition here
Thanks for reading!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine it is a private nursery- they pay rates, the parents sending their children there do so in order to work and contribute through their taxes and pay council tax! Maybe we should all just

Thanks outraged that' s my point exactly! Let's just install turnstiles every few yards and we can pay by the metre!

Haven't read the whole thread, but my DS1 is 10. He has been using the mens' lavatories for about three years now.

I don't want your 9 year old boy in the female loos with me.

Yes and this goes towards finding the upkeep and maintenance of the parks so that they can be enjoyed by members of the public.

A private nursery is a business, making money and the children attending are clients.

What should a business be able to use a public asset as its own for free?

Migsy1 · 26/01/2014 20:19

Aren't the children attending it members of the public too? I guess their parents have paid taxes.

Weemee · 26/01/2014 20:29

Plenty businesses use public assets: they drive on the roads, they walk on the pavements, they use the services of the emergency services as needed....does that mean everything should be charged on a pay per use basis?

They're not using it 'as their own' are they?

If they're closing off an area of the park for their sole use, then yes they should pay.

I think what we're talking about is just taking the kids to the park alongside everyone else.

If those children went to the park with their parents they wouldn't have to pay. If the nursery nurses went to the park they wouldn't have to pay. If those nursery nurses take those children to the park they have to pay?! It makes no sense.

Don't get caught up in the private nursery being a business. This will also apply to council funded playgroups, nurseries and schools. And from what I understand, the fee paid is an admin fee to get a permission slip not an entrance fee. How much of that money do you think will reach the budget of the parks and recreation department?

here is a rather interesting and witty article

Those of you who don't know Glasgow, they have massive parks. Huge swathes of green land all over the city. This proposal has stemmed from a twitter post inviting people to meet up at a park. Now we all know that on the internet things can get out of hand, but the tweet wasn't inviting a load of nine year old boys to use the ladies loos. So why the legislation??

Personally I think all toilets should be unisex anyway.

because it is a public park Confused

GlaikitFizzog · 27/01/2014 09:05

And businesses pay non domestic rates to the council, far in excess of council tax.

mrsjay · 27/01/2014 09:11

well exactly Glakit
