Why is I/me so hard to remember?

As in "me and Dave went to the fair"...but you wouldn't say "me went to the fair"

"she gave it to Dave and I"..."she gave it to I"??

My kids understand this (they are 8 and 6) so it can't be that hard! But it's driving me mad, especially seeing it written incorrectly. Mind you, there must be those who know it's easy to get wrong; they are the ones who use 'myself' instead

The way I remember it is to try saying it without the other person. e.g. you would say "I went to the fair" but not "me went to the fair" so it's "Dave and I went to the fair".

Likewise you would say "she gave it to me" not "she gave it to I" so it would be "she gave it me and Dave"

err, no..."she gave it to Dave and me"

I think you are both saying the same thing!
And TB I think "me and Dave" would be equally correct

Thanks SBP.

NAOTB - whether it's "me and Dave" or "Dave and me" the point was you wouldn't say "she gave it to Dave and I".
