Pedants' corner

Embarrassed my DD with my pedantry

A few months ago I was on the bus with DD2 (13) and it was one of those wet and miserable days when the windows were all steamed up.

A teenaged lad sitting opposite us wrote F**k of on the window with his finger and my DD was when I leaned over and said to him "I think you'll find there are two fs in off" .

The lad look a me a bit like this and then added the missing f .

I love being a pedant .

love it. especially the fact that he added the missing f. The poor guy was looking for an argument not a spelling lesson!

CheeeseOnToast · 01/07/2010 10:09

haha, that's good

singsinthebath · 01/07/2010 19:36

A genuine LOL here.

tootsieroll · 02/07/2010 14:32

This has made my day

Any clues as to what your DD was expecting you to say (instead of what you did)?

Or does she know of your degree in pedantry ?

TidyBush · 03/07/2010 18:21

Oh, she wasn't surprised at all - I'm renowned

Oh, clicked too soon. Meant to add that it is not unknown for me to ask for the manager in random shops to point out spelling mistakes and typos on notices.

Are you me? I would have probably added the 'f' myself though!

TidyBush · 03/07/2010 18:59

Ah, but don't you think it's better to spread the love of correct spelling?

When DD is older she might like R4's "I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue" although she might get some of the double entendres now, given the way teens are fast learners...

It will certainly be an eye opener on the benefits of 'correct spelling' and how easy something can be (deliberately) misunderstood.

NWG I've already indoctrinated both of my DDs with the filth wit of ISIHAC - I took them to see it live last year and DD2(13) got more of the double entendres than DD1(16).

Ah, yes, love the filth wit in ISIHAC. Downloaded 25+ years of it last year !

Shocking about your family finding, I knew they learn filth faster, younger, these days, but that shows the effect is accelerating!

Love this! well done - hope he remembers next time.
