Pedants' corner

Chocoholic - a nonsense.

There is no such substance as 'chocohol' so why the term chocoholic?

Similarly, there is no such activity as 'workohol' no matter how much graft you put in.

Surely the only correct term of this type is alcoholic? All the others make my teeth itch.

With apologies to the pedants for my wayward use of inverted commas!

I'm not sure that's true. My ex is definitely a workoholic, but doesn't really do work, or at least nothing actually useful, so there must be something else- workohol- that creates the addiction.

More research needed.

Because "chocolatic" and "workic" sound stupid and mean nothing.

Everone knows at once what workaholic, sexaholic and invent-your-own-aholic mean.

Surely the first commandment of language must be to be understood?

AMumInScotland · 25/06/2010 12:48

Well, they're made-up words, but aren't they all in the long run? At least -holic is less irritating than -gate for any political scandal!

RuthieCohen · 25/06/2010 17:08

I know you're right, Butterbur and it's why I love language.

Anything 'aholic' makes me think of booze though, so 'chocaholic' always summons up images of liqueur chocs. Of which I once ate a whole box in a juvenile attempt to get pissed and was rather ill. Probably the main reason I dislike the phrase!
