Misuse of Myself

People are using 'myself' a lot when it should simply be 'me'. It is sending me under.

In a restaurant the other day I was asked if I wanted something "for yourself?" as if my Self was some extra being I had brought along that might want a bit of Parmesan on the side. Seems like people are afraid of saying "me" and "you" these days, lest they might give the impression of having said something quite clearly, about one person, that they cannot later deny.

Or something like that.

I mentioned this on another thread recently. It drives me insane. I think it's because people who use it seem to think it's somehow 'correct' or even - shudders - 'clever'.

I like the idea of looking around with slightly bemused look, then saying, 'no, just me, I haven't brought any selves with me today'.

God, I'm uptight.

Oh, and it's particularly annoying when combined with the extraneous 'today', as in 'can I get anything for yourself today?'

Even worse - I can't bear it, but I'm obviously on a roll - would be 'Can I get anything for yourself today at all?

It occurs to me that this use of "myself" means that the thickerati don't have to know when to say "me" and when to say "I"- which they increasingly don't.

I was in the bank yesterday having a meeting and the woman I was talking to kept saying 'myself' and 'yourself' all the time.
