Just out of interest, on the scale of pedantry how much would this annoy you?

Person 1 - "Have you got 10p?"
Person 2 - "I do ..."

Is it, for instance, as bad as a misplaced apostrophe, or is it a minor misdemeanor?

It's a hanging offence!

Oooowwwww

Agree with alouiseg. It hurts my ears.

StealthPolarBear · 02/06/2010 17:51

wouldn't notice, in fact would probably say it

jenduff · 02/06/2010 17:51

Hmm is it a dialect thing? A lot of my Irish family would answer like that.

Dammit. It really annoys DH when I do it, and his annoyance makes me .

I can be a pedant with the best of them, but it escalated at the weekend when my MIL also got involved. She tried to defuse the situation by saying that it "is probably a northern thing" which makes me more , as she says it in such a patronising way, that she may as well be patting me on the head at the same time.

Anyway, DH will be thrilled to learn that he is not alone in this

Americans do that too, don't they? It's not northern...

draggedthroughahedgebackwards · 02/06/2010 18:14

I have no idea if it is northern or not, it is just that she uses that as an excuse for anything I do (positive or negative). I could run through the streets wearing only a bobble hat, and it would be "something northern". The irony is that my accent doesn't actually give much indication of where I come from.

I think it is American. I must have acquired it from watching too much TV

Perhaps you should start wearing a loaf of Hovis on your head when she's around, maybe get some ferrets? Sounds like you could have an lot of fun with her...
