hung vs hanged

I have been arguing with a friend, If someone was executed, would you say, x was hung, or x was hanged?

hanged. Meat is hung, people are hanged!

Definitely hanged - but only in that instance. Hung in all other cases.

Yes, hanged is right when talking about people. Although I always think it sounds strange. Does anyone know why though? (Not why I think it sounds strange, but why it's hanged and not hung for people).
