Ideas about my stations...Pedants only.

I suppose it's just me, but "train station" grates. It's a railway station. Or just a station.

And while I'm here, is "uni" now standard usage?

Kat - Train Station sits with me ok. It's not any other sort of station is it? Uni - well, sometimes people can't be bothered to say a whole word which annoys me normally. But Uni doesn't bother me at all.

I know what you mean. I also dislike 'station stop', which I think is supposed to include both stations and stops which aren't proper stations; but I can't see why they can't just say 'station' or 'stop' where appropriate. Come to think of it, In fact I think the latter is actually a 'halt'.

train station - fine
uni - no, cheesy boak and esp not by those at said 'uni' i so very hate that abbreviation

pixieonaleaf - it's not quite the same, uni could mean 'one', 'flu only means influenza

Of course - 'bus station', 'bus stop': railway language has been brought into line with the bus service so that we can all understand it.

Uni - I don't like it, but I suspect it's for rather snobby reasons and even internally objecting to it makes me feel like a retired colonel (with apologies to all retired colonels on Mumsnet). I'm not against linguistic change in principle, but we all have our own tastes.

I don't feel either is particularly wrong, train station is exactly what it is and railway station does the same job although is more traditional. Pedantically, I couldn't call it.

I called it Uni while I was there, as did everyone else ( however, I didn't go to oxford/cambridge) so Uni is fine with me.
