Pedants' corner

It is a chest of DRAWERS not draws

Why can people not spell this word correctly? I am amazed at how often the word 'draws' appears instead of 'drawers' on this website. I see it most days somewhere here but have never felt able to mention it anywhere incase I got flamed. Now I've found this little corner I feel so much better!

I quite agree with you.

WingedVictory · 02/03/2010 23:33

I once had a go with a pen at a book published by a small press (no money for proof-reading, evidently, and the writer was the series editor. I ought to have known better), which had this mistake. The pages were a mess once I had finished reading and correcting. Shame, as the story was not bad.

I think you'll find it's "Chester Draws". Look, here's some on eBay:

And, this week's special....
Chimley Pots!

Mr Maker talks about the Doodle Draws, so bang goes the next generation, too....

BooyhooNOTboohoooORbooyou · 07/03/2010 20:38

thank god you posted this.

i am from N. ireland and i was beginning to think it was perhaps the way it is spelt in the rest of the UK.

so many times i have wanted to correct the posters on Mn but have chickened out incase it was me that was wrong.

WingedVictory · 07/03/2010 21:11

BooyhooNOTboohoooORbooyou, you still have to be careful about correcting other posters. However, if someone is being obnoxious and thinking s/he is superior, without having the grammar/spelling/clarity to support that, please do correct!

BooyhooNOTboohoooORbooyou · 07/03/2010 21:29

oh, i know. i still wouldn't for the same reason. i am usually ok with grammar etc, but you can never be too sure and i would be too scared of making a fool out of myself.

WingedVictory · 07/03/2010 21:46

There was a really nice put-down on spelling grounds a few days ago...

This and the following four posts.

thehillsarealive · 10/03/2010 11:35

wingedvictory - that was a thread and a half, the spelling mistakes and the 'to' instead of too gets on my goat...

as you were.

THANK GOD someone has posted about this chest of drawers, I was beginning to think I was wrong and that cannot be true.

WingedVictory · 10/03/2010 13:29

No, chests of drawers (plural) are severely abused in language!

RedbinDippers · 10/03/2010 13:59

Mine is a chest of draws in drawers.

bronze · 10/03/2010 14:01

If you are in an architects office does it them become a chest of draws?

Alicetheinvisible · 10/03/2010 14:03

Oh be quiet! You have seen my post on a thread haven't you? The same one i am equally ashamed of

Fimbow · 10/03/2010 14:08

Thank goodness, I have being doubting myself for ages, that I was wrong and it is indeed "draws".

Also it is bought not brought.

WingedVictory · 10/03/2010 14:10

You "draw" out the "drawer"

YanknCock · 17/03/2010 15:39

Oh thank you! I see 'draws' everywhere and was starting to think it must be one of those British/American English differences.
