How to address a vet

Is a qualified vet addressed as 'Dr'?

I'm just writing out a card to someone who graduated earlier this year and realised I didn't know what to put on the envelope. I should know the answer but I'm not sure and don't want to cause offence.

Mr I think. Unless they have a (human) medical degree or a PhD.

titchy · 15/12/2009 15:04

Oops - or Ms of course!

HeffaMerryChristmas · 15/12/2009 15:13

Ok, thanks Titchy I've always assumed a vet was a Mr/Ms/Mrs/Miss. Her partner is a doctor so if I put 'Dr X and Miss Y' and she's meant to be 'Dr' too it will look really bad!

Wikipedia seemed to suggest that because vets hold a DVM then they should be doctor, but it wasn't clear.

I agree with Titchy it is Mr or Ms or Mrs or whatever unless they have a human medical degree or a PHD. I haven't looked at the Wiki entry but sometimes it is a bit American rather than British.

HeffaMerryChristmas · 15/12/2009 15:19

I thought the Wiki entry was probably more American than British.

Thanks for your help, that's the last card done! Until the inevitable one from someone who I've forgotten of course.

Catriona

a vet i don't know i'd call doctor though, they studied for years and work their arses off so they've damned well earned the title far more than any arts student with a PhD!

ajandjjmum · 15/12/2009 15:28

Aren't dentists now Drs? Not quite connected - just curious.

PuppyMonkey · 15/12/2009 15:36

I'd just call them Dave and Betty.

Even if that's not actually their first names, I'd just call them that for simplicity.

SmacOnTheLipsUnderTheMistletoe · 15/12/2009 17:26

oooh I think tulips has got a bit of chip on her shoulder !
My dentist is Mr, says so on his fancy pants website!

Good call PuppyMonkey

If you want to address a vet the best approach is to pre-address a sticky label, then distract them with a gin and tonic while you slap the label on their back. Getting them into the post box is more tricky, though...

'Your Vetness'

KurriKurri · 22/12/2009 20:46

Niece and her DH are both vets - they are Mr and Mrs as far as I know.
