Pedants' corner

I have lost two words

This is not actually pendantry, but I thought I would have most luck if I put it to the Pedants' Corner squatters.

Two separate questions:

  1. This morning I called my daughter a "daft bessom" and then realised that I have only ever read the word 'bessom' and don't know it's literal meaning. Not wanting to unwittingly use an offensive word, I looked it up... and can't find it anywhere. There is a word bessom isn't there? What does it mean?
  1. Years ago I had a 'Word of the Day' calendar. It gave me a word that means a collections of jams, marmalades, honeys etc. It was the breakfast equivalent of 'condiments' I loved this word and used it as often as I could poncily shoe-horn it into conversation. Now I have forgotten it completely. Anyone know?

PS apologies for any spelling or grammar mistakes. I'm not really literate enough to post here, I know .

Trucklements?

Cooroo · 22/08/2014 06:38

Late to the party but I have a suggestion:

Could it be 'jentacular'? Adjective, not noun. Means 'of or pertaining to breakfast'.

snoggle · 22/08/2014 07:04

I can't believe I read the whole thing and there is no conclusion.

I'm going with opsonomy

snoggle · 22/08/2014 07:05

Opsony even

ohmymimi · 22/08/2014 13:41

Opsony and jentacular! I can't wait to use those.
Truckle Isn't it tracklements? I think it means preserves like chutneys, to accompany cold meets and cheese.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 22/08/2014 13:49

It's like coming home....

ohmymimi · 22/08/2014 13:57

Regalements? Doesn't specifically refer to breakfast, but it sounds impressive.

ohmymimi · 22/08/2014 14:00

Put your feet up, Hearts, it'll be a long wait for a resolution to this one.Smile

ShutUpLegs · 22/08/2014 14:02

Gah! I was dead excited to see this one come up - I thought we had an answer.

I am a bit perturbed at how often this crops up in my brain as to what this might be....

ShutUpLegs · 22/08/2014 14:03

If jentacular is the adj, can we have jentacles for the jars themselves?

BoiledPiss · 22/08/2014 14:40

Oh god... What's the answer!

Cooroo · 23/08/2014 10:25

I love jentacles! Can we coin it?

Shodan · 23/08/2014 10:35

Blimey.

I didn't realise it had been that long since this thread.

How can it have been bugging me for nearly 5 years? Shock

And still no definitive answer.

Gah.

God I can't help with the preserves at all but my mother used to call me a 'bissum' when I was little (we are in New Zealand). I had no idea no one else appeared to use the word till I tried to google it one day and had a lot of trouble tracking it down.

This site -
foottalk.blogspot.co.nz/2008/02/this-valentine-dont-you-be-swept-off.html
gave the meaning that was closest to how I remembered it being used, in that it was used more affectionately than contemptuously.
'Bissum' was also a common Scottish noun used to describe ‘mischieviously playful little girls.’

If you google bissum rather than bessom more comes up. Now I am off to try and drop opsonomy into everyday conversation.

(In full it reads 'By the Middle Ages the beson broom had become a symbol of antiestablishmentarianism and sensuality. This is evidenced by the word 'besom' (bissum) becoming a slang term for an easy woman or hussy. 'Bissum' was also a common Scottish noun used to describe ‘mischieviously playful little girls.’)

This thread is a thing of beauty. So MaMight never came back did she? I have a theory: she must have been thinking of pålegg...not opsony....pålegg the word itself...that's why she remembered it as being poncy, because what is more poncy than using a foreign word for something that does, as we now know, have an English equivalent?

MortaIWombat · 23/08/2014 13:22

My German mum uses "belag" or plural "belaege". It really just means "toppings", though.

Nice to see this thread still going strong. Smile

Thumbwitch · 23/08/2014 13:43

Gosh I can't believe that MaMIght left this hanging!
now I'm sucked in too... argh!
