'eh' or 'uh' ?

My DD is in reception and just starting to learn to read.
This is so silly, but for 'a' do you say 'eh' or 'uh'?
I've got her saying 'eh', but I think I might've got it wrong.
I know I say 'eh' for some things, maybe if I'm talking about a particular thing - but 'uh' for others - quite randomly.

I say "a"
"eh" is E
"uh" is U

So if "eh" is E and "uh" is U then "ah" is A

Make sense?

Makes sense. I just don't think I ever say 'ah'.
"look, it's ah kite"

I might've misled you with the 'eh', perhaps I mean 'ay'.

but if 'ay' is A
then 'eeee' is E
and 'you' is U

They learn phonetically at school so it would be
A - 'ah' (a short 'ah' not 'aahhh')
E - 'eh'
U - 'uh'

maybe it's regional which could be why you wouldn't say 'ah'....?
(I'm from London)

Depends on the context I think 'ay' gives added emphasis.

e.g. 'Here is 'uh' dog, here is 'uh' girl.'

But, 'There is 'ay' house, but its not the house I'm looking for.'

But she will soon work out which one is appropriate, so I wouldn't worry too much.
