Random use of the word to mean "due to" or "because". I now hear it at least 6 times a day on Radio 4 (vox pops, happily, not presenters yet, but it's only a matter of time) and it's driving me slowly to distraction.

Oh, poor OP. "Due to" does not mean "because of" (that would be "owing to"). It means "caused by".
