Why do people do it?

Like greengrocers who offer their Best "Carrots". What, so they're not actually carrots, then?

(There is one in here on Travel.)

my mother does it - for the name and greeting in birthday cards.

Drives me nuts!

makes me feel she is not really wishing me a happy birthday at all!
