I have had a lifetime of getting it wrong I'm sure and use 'it's' for belonging, but I think I'm wrong. Can that use ever be right?

I didn't realise I was quite so dim.

It is the opposite to the others. (ah, ya gotta love the english language!)

It's is a contraction of "it is" or "it has" - "It's raining"

Its is the possessive - "the boat rested on its keel"
