Eye-rack is my favourite most annoying americanism.
In his book Bill Bryon visited Cairo [in the U S of A] which is pronounced Kay-ro.
Aluminum for Aluminium
Edinboro for Edinburgh.
Rowt for route

on the other hand, i hate the way english pronounce pasta instead of the correct way, 'pahsta'.

But what about going to the ball-AY, with maybe a glass of mer-LOW?

sweetnitanitro · 21/06/2009 17:28

Aluminium is actually spelt aluminum over there so they are not pronouncing it wrong. I didn't believe my Canadian DH to start with, he had to phone one of his relatives and get them to go and get a roll of tin foil and spell it down the phone to me

He can't say 'about' though, it comes out as 'aboot'.

It's also a translation thing. As it's originally a Middle Eastern word it's been translated to the closest that the Mid Easterners in areas have been able to get it and commonly used ones have been adopted by different areas... makes no sense really! I asked my Dad when I was younger what the difference was and that was his way of explaining it (he's Mid Eastern lol)

I do hate typical American accents, makes me I-Ran and I-Rack for example shudders

I can understand the kebob thing.I'd imagine it would properly be pronounced 'kebahb.'so the American version is close to the proper one. It actually sounds more authentic than our corruption 'kebab'. i'm going on a bit now!

You forgot the bAYsil with your erbs. I remember talking to an American bloke about Edinburgh and he kept correcting me by saying Edinboro in a really pointed way
