surely it should be 'is'

but I'm not a pedant at all
shouldn't even be here

SuziSeis · 30/04/2009 21:56

tee hee trinity

I agree with you as it 'sounded' wrong but thought 'this clever woman must know best!'

data is plural (or should that be "are plural"? )
Plural of datum
But I agree, it's slipped into general use. I wrote an assignment once, using "data is" all the way through but the pedant in me wouldn't let me submit it until I'd been through and corrected each one!

MadamAnt · 30/04/2009 22:00

The word "data" is plural (the singular is datum) so she is correct. However, use of the singular verb after "data" has become commonplace and accepted.

I was too slow

SuziSeis · 30/04/2009 22:02

thankyou oh clever ones

plans a way to inset this into next social meeting!

Yup. 'Data are...', just like 'media are'...

I correct this all the time.
