Sun burned or sun burnt?

Please settle this squabble DP and I are having!

Is it more correct to say sun burned or sun burnt? Which do you say and which do people commonly use?

I think it's burnt, he argues that the past simple is formed by adding ED except for certain irregular verbs. They seem to be interchangeable but that doesn't make both of them right, does it?

I've been stressing about this for nearly 2 days now (sad, I know)...

I think they're both right. Isn't it like spelled and spelt?

I felt confused a little while ago about learned and learnt. I would say it is sun burnt as well, but the solution to this e]
dilemma, I think, is that either is acceptable!
