I had written the latter however it came up in a Word spell check so looked in the online dictionary where both are listed!
How would you spell it?

Opthalmic. First option doesn't make sense to me or look right!

I can always count on my fellow pedants in a time of need. Merci x

I know it looks odd, but in the UK is def ophthalmic - I have worked for an eye surgeon in the past, and although I am now almost totally without brain cells, I'm pretty confident I'm right . The other spelling is prob the American version...

Fruitloaf, you are right according to the Cambridge Dictionary online.

My very old dictionary of etymology gives

ophthalmia: from Greek ophthalmos (eye), so ophthalmic
