In light of/in the light of

I've always thought that it was: "In the light of these developments, we are going to xyz".

But recently I seem to see: "In light of this....etc etc".

Obviously not something you'd actually say in conversation, I think, but any thoughts on which is correct?

My instinct is "in light of". But I don't know why.

I think I am in a minority with the "the" but will persist as it sounds better to my ear.
