Dear makers of Plum Baby cereal,
Müsli or Muesli. Not Müesli.

Well, hactually, if I may say so, on my first ever visit to Pedants' Corner it was invented by Dr. Bircher, who was Swiss. And the Swiss write "Müesli". Or even "Birchermüesli".

Blimey do they really? I sit corrected, thanks! I presumed it was just another an example of injudicious sprinkling of diacritics where they're not needed to lend an air of sophistication.

I do wonder why you get üe in Swiss German though - seems sort of tautological.

Er - don't you stand corrected? (Claws back sense of superiority to cover up not understanding reference to diacritics).

TaurielTest · 02/03/2009 09:05

Well, I would, but I'm sitting down
Diacritics are just extra bits on letters (accents, hooks, dots, slashes) - and it always irks me when they're just added to make things exotic. cf Princess Tiáamii.
Shame I seem to have picked on a case when they seem to have known what they were about.
