Or am I getting annoyed for nothing?

I have just checked my Facebook page and Someone has posted a music video.
The caption above it says

"XXX has just favorited YYYYY"

Is favorited an actual word? Or is this another reson to deregister from Facebook?

"favourite" is an adjective. You add ed onto a verb to show the past tense- so no it is not a word!

Well, technically, any noun can be verbed, and all words have to start from someone coining them. So, if you were to define a real word as something that is in a dictionary, then no, as dictionaries wait until there are sufficient examples of usage from a variety of sources to show widespread use before entering new words.

Text as a verb is a pretty good example of this, and comes from a new technology.

That said, I think "favourited" is utterly vile.

cringe.
Definitely grounds to block the person who used it

I am foreign and migt be wrong but I think it would be "favoured" non?

Gorionine · 01/03/2009 12:02

might ( it is not me it is the keyboard!)

Habbibu · 01/03/2009 12:04

Gorionine, I think it's because you can make someone a "favourite" on facebook, hence favourited, as opposed to favoured, which has a slightly different meaning.

Favourited is vile, though, and "made xxx a favourite" would have done just fine.

Thanks Habbibu .

I know I can always rely on MN to improve my English!
