Gormless or Gaumless?

I always thought 'gormless'.

However, the word 'gorm' does not appear to exist. Although 'gormless' does.

There is however, a definition for 'gaum' - attention or understanding. And likewise, gaumless, which seems to mean the same as 'gormless'.

Is either term acceptable?

Seeing this is a state which often applies to me, I need to know.

Aha - you can spell it both ways according to that dictionary, however I think that the first way is generally accepted.
