Pedants' corner

typo in tip of the day

onepieceofbrusselssprout · 10/01/2009 19:01

Please look at this; "supper soft bum" - surely it should be "super"?

I am hesitant to report it as it seems petty and also I reported an error a while ago in tip of the day.

Please help! I know that I will find understanding from the Pedants.

Thanks.

yy I sniggered at having a supper soft bum

ComeOVeneer · 10/01/2009 19:05

Sorry but whilst it is obvious that there is a typo in the tip, I really feel starting a thread about it, let alone pointing in out by reporting it is indeed highly petty.

The thing that I find even sadder is this isn't the only thread today that has been started about this very subject. Surely we could be more productive with our time on MN than point out others inadequacies?

ScottishMummy · 10/01/2009 19:09

gosh!you are snippy.so you spotted an error and just can not wait to crow about it.nice

ScottishMummy · 10/01/2009 19:23

this thread is a wee gem.snippy and condescening

"Surely we could be more productive with our time on MN than point out others inadequacies?

that is priceless!

inadequacies!?one additional "s" and she is deemed inadequate.you understood the post adequately enough to comment,so the grammatical error was not an impediment

ComeOVeneer · 10/01/2009 19:38

Scottishmummy you seem to be the one having trouble understanding posts. I am on the same side as you in this one. I hate threads like these where people post for no other reason that to point out peoples little errors. I dislike those who hold the moral high ground and feel the need to do this.

NAB3lovelychildren · 10/01/2009 19:41

It could indeed be a typo and not someone thinking that is how it is spelt. I am sure 99% of posters have missed the correct key at some point.

NAB3lovelychildren · 10/01/2009 19:41

Help with what, OP?

ComeOVeneer · 10/01/2009 19:43

I assumed the "Please help" meant "please post to show you agree with me and support my attitude"

ScottishMummy · 10/01/2009 19:45

CoV who's "inadequacies" were you referring to then.do clarify.do you mean the spelling error is indicative of "inadequacies" or that it is snippy to "point out others inadequacies?"

onepieceofbrusselssprout · 10/01/2009 19:58

sorry sorry sorry.

I have obviously been misunderstood. I was only having a little chuckle as I think BoysAreLikeDogs realised. (although I may have misunderstood this too)

I used the term inadequacies in a tongue in cheek manner, as in "fgs does it really matter wether someone can type/spell properly, and does it amke you feel big and clever to belittle people by pointing it out". orry this is a real bug bear of mine on mn when people do this to others, who either can't type as well, have not 100% grammer and/or spelling skills. It is one of the less appealing sides to mn imo.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 10/01/2009 20:26

But it is Pedants Corner. For people who are pedantic.

EllieG · 10/01/2009 20:27

Wasn't the OP joking? I think 'tis a bit hard to have a go at her - personally, if was my tip I would understand I was just having my leg gently pulled

onepieceofbrusselssprout · 10/01/2009 20:27

We all make errors and typos, of course we do. Pedants' Corner has many examples.

If I have offended then I am sorry, it was not my intention. It certainly wasn't aimed at the person who submitted the tip; I am sure that they are proof-read (sp?) and edited by MNHQ.

OP posts:
ScottishMummy · 10/01/2009 20:30

i find it sneering to comment on spelling/grammar in a post if not an impediment to understanding it

very arsey, and when I see it in ongoing discussion i always think "is that the most meaningful response you could muster" you dullard

CoV I agree I dislike snippy posts based solely upon spelling

onepieceofbrusselssprout · 10/01/2009 20:30

Thank you, MaryMOC.

If I had been the one to submit this tip then I would chuckle myself that MNHQ had either put it on the front page with a typo (if I had made the typo in the first place), or they had mistyped it themselves.

mrsbabookaloo · 10/01/2009 20:33

Well, I was a bit irritated not only by the typo, but also by the fact that the tip of the day was a bit...well....crap. And smug.

EllieG · 10/01/2009 20:34

I think is worse to call people rude names

onepieceofbrusselssprout · 10/01/2009 20:34

ScottishMummy I have apologised (after you referred to me as "snippy" and my post as condescending)

I have tried to explain myself, but you have gone on to describe me as "arsey" "sneering" and "a dullard".

We are all entitled to our opinions, of course, but I did apologise if I have caused offence.

OP posts:
ScottishMummy · 10/01/2009 20:36

we have cross posted, that is all.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 10/01/2009 20:37

Oh dear bathed my children and look at this thread.

Onepiece fwiw I stand by my post that I sniggered at having a supper soft bum.

It's funny, no?

Sheesh

Onepiece come with me to style and chat about Marks £12 jeans

ComeOVeneer · 10/01/2009 20:50

OK, I'm sorry, I didn't initially realise you were being humourous, I assumed it was a bit of a dig. The written word on here is often misinterpreted.

I do stand by my opinion that people on here who point out peoples errors and seem to revel in their "superiority" bug me.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 10/01/2009 20:52

No worries CoV

Come and have a look at these jeans?

They'll make your bum look tiny
