In the phrase "enjoys other childrens company"

need an apostrophe

I think no (as there isn't a missing letter) because it is a plural

But the computer keeps putting one in

I am so confused

She enjoys other children's company.

Or

She enjoys the company of other children. Easier?

ROFFLE at your thread title - that will get 'em in

enjoy other children's company
children is plural
the 's indicates posessive.

it's a great title for pedants though, we could call ourselves apostropheuses !

SuperBunny · 09/11/2008 20:27

Yes, it needs one because it is the company of other children. Their company. Childrens is not a word - children is already plural.

Therefore, "enjoys other children's comoany" but I would write, "enjoys the company of other children"

yes, children's needs an apostrophe.
the plural (children) doesn't end in an s. so when you are saying that something belongs to the children you need to add 's

if the plural ended in s, ie, babies. you wouldn't need to add the s. just the apostrophe.
the babies' nappies. for example

If you use missing letters to help you with apostrophes, think of it this way*:

Tom, his book = Tom hi's book
Harry, his ball = Harry hi's ball

... so, by analogy (which uses "his" as a default):

Helen, his book = Helen's book

children, his company = children's company

*NB: this is just a way of helping see the rule. It's not meant to indicate this is the real accurate historical origin of our possessive apostrophe system ... but it's quite a vivid helper, I find.
