My Chambers says both are possible.

My personal view is that the double s is an abomination.

I know both can be used but is there a more acceptable version.... ialways use one over the other....

Don't know where the double "s" came from, I thought it was wrong till I consulted Chambers.

frannikin · 16/10/2008 13:12

Surely you should decide one way or the other? Focus - focused - focusing (which would make sense because focus only has one s to start with) or focus - focussed - focussing (which I dislike).

Botbot · 16/10/2008 13:14

That double s is a real bugbear of mine - I know it's allowed but I really don't like it.

Likewise tranquility/tranquillity. Bleurgh to the double l.

littlewhitebull · 16/10/2008 21:37

Should always be a single "s" in my opinion. I didn't even know a double "s" was permissible, it just doesn't look right.

hunkermunker · 16/10/2008 21:38

Single S.

policywonk · 16/10/2008 21:39

Double 's' is a US-style spelling, but is acceptable over here.

Should definitely stick to one or the other - focusing/focussed makes no sense.

tearinghairout · 16/10/2008 21:42

Double 'S' doesn't look right - Americanism?

But my computer keeps coming up with 'Action Canceled' and that doesn't look right either! (Quite apart from the fact that it doesn't seem to mean anything.)
