Stadiums is preferred now, because it is no longer a latin word. Therefore there is no need to use a latin ending. Only those who have no interest in what goes on inside stadiums calls them stadia. On another stadium-related note, a vomitorium is not a place where people go to throw up, it is the passageway connecting the viewing area of the stadium to the outside. You enter and exit the bowl of the stadium through the vomitorium. Though most sprots organisations just hang signs saying "EXIT" these days. Idiots.

Stadiums. It's an English word that just happens to be the same as the original Latin. You don't go into a supermarket and buy two 'pizze', you buy two pizzas.

Seems an opportune moment to dig out this anecdote again.

Apparently one Cambridge professor recently e-mailed another to suggest that they should meet up for Sunday lunch and "discuss some conundra about pendula". The answer he received was:

"Surely we both have more interesting things to occupy us on a Sunday afternoon than sitting on our ba doing sa?"
