Oh yes! This drives me mad. I also want -ly back. I'm fed up of people doing things "amazing".

I am with you on that especially packed lunch not pack lunch. Also chest of drawers not chesta drawers or similar nonsense...

GreenEyesIsBack · 20/09/2026 20:39

I'd like the word, "to", back too.
We went Spain, my bf went gym etc.
Arrrrgh, no.

I’d like sitting back.

Everyone is always sat nowadays.

Vaguelyclassical · 21/09/2026 12:36

And the past tense of "to text" is TEXTED, damn it! Not "I text him yesterday."

I want Monday to Friday back instead of Monday through Friday. Hate it!

EdnaMole · 21/09/2026 14:08

I find myself disproportionately irritated by the use of the word “invites” instead of invitations…
Additionally, talk of “medalling” and “podiuming” in a sporting context makes me twitch.

Verbing weirds language, as Calvin once said.

Gosh look at you all with your pedantic demands. Don’t you know it’s first come first serve?

(I’ll get my coat)

Text is the one that gets me because SO many people seem to do it. Even friends of mine who are usually very good with this stuff.

Yes, it’s been Americanised! I hate that phrasing, it’s so unclear to me.

AmadeustheAlpaca · 22/09/2026 00:29

It's giving someone a present, not gifting a present. I know that gifting is not grammatically incorrect but it's so IRRITATING.
I am also affected by all the people who use the word effected instead of affected.

Isn't "Monday through Friday" intended to be MORE specific/clear than "Monday to Friday"? For example, if I say "The sale runs from Monday to Friday", I may mean that it runs until Friday, so Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and stops at the beginning of Friday, or I may mean that it is inclusive of Friday and it stops at the end of Friday. If I say "The sale runs from Monday through Friday", it's clear that all five days are included.

Yes, that is pretty clear. It’s when you get “June through July” etc. I get confused!

But it’s used to describe Mon to Friday as we know it. If I said we’re open Monday to Friday you know it includes Friday. I think it’s just another Americanism creeping in.
