Saw yet another misplaced 'o' today and was annoyed enough to post on here.

The pronunciation even changes.

Why do people insist on doing this?

Is 'I am loosing all hope' being taught as correct in schools?

Yes, very annoying. I’ve noticed it’s rarely the other way, i.e. never “lose” clothing, but often using “loose” to describe being unable to find an item or indeed “loosing” faith.

I'm afraid the problem is a lost cause

It's so prevalent I now just accept that's how it is, otherwise I'd go bonkers!

I can never tell the difference, so I’m afraid this is a crime I’m guilty of. 🫣

My sister in law does this. She also uses of instead of have (could of, would of). Her husband is an English teacher and tried to explain to her why it's wrong, but she didn't understand. She has a degree, so she is educated.

It drives me mad as it means two completely different things. It seems to have become so entrenched now that I can't see it changing.

Aloud is another one that is being used more and more instead of allowed. I have no idea how that ever started, unless you can blame Girls aloud?

I see this every single day on MN and it annoys me every time.

I find it incredibly annoying but it’s a mistake made so often and by so many people that I often feel that the spellings should be formally reversed somehow.

Lose loses an o - doesn't mean it's loose.

Even if she doesn't understand it (goodness knows why not; it's hardly rocket science) can she not just learn that it's could/would/should have, not of?

I'm sure she's capable of understanding and learning the correct terms, but for some reason she won't use them. I think she just doesn't care.

I think that this is the most common misspelling today, bar none, judging from reading forums like Mumsnet, Reddit, etc. It's absolutely EVERYWHERE and it's SO annoying. It's so common that I'm actually worried that the Oxford English Dictionary is going to include it as a variant.

I don't know why people do it. Surely lose/loose isn't THAT difficult? They're even pronounced differently! All you have to remember is that the double "oo" is to do with things being not-tight.

Don’t laugh, I was already terrible at English at school and I remember the difference by picturing the “Loose Women” sign from my student days 😂

I can never get this right. I think it's because lose has the oo sound, so I just have a mental block on it now.

When I see this I just feel a little bit superior.
The other one that does the same is, "a chest of draws," often seen on Freecycle.
