aaargh

OP posts:
themildmannneredjanitor · 30/06/2008 12:17

so you say i-ron

and draw-ers

because that is just wrong!!!!

where are you from?

Dottoressa · 30/06/2008 12:17

LOL at chester draws!!

Flier · 30/06/2008 12:18

I did ask earlier in the thread if perhaps it was a northern v southern thing. I'm scottish.

OP posts:
Flier · 30/06/2008 12:18

who is chester and what does he draw?

OP posts:
fryalot · 30/06/2008 12:43

I say ion as well.
Those of you that say iRon, does that rhyme with Byron or is it more like the Irn of Irn Bru?

girlandboy · 30/06/2008 12:55

Oh I say ion too. And draws, not draw-errrrrz.
I think it's a northern/southern thing as well, though I'm slap bang in the Midlands! Ohhhhh, where do I belong???????

prettybird · 30/06/2008 13:06

Flier - I agree with you. it is "eye-ron" and "draw-errz". Anything else is just wrong.

Just like "draw-ring" for "drawing" is wrong, wrong, wrong.

BTW - I'm Scottish too But speak in a very posh (I'm told) accent.

EffiePerine · 30/06/2008 13:08

ion

I think it North and Scots to pronounce the rs (Midlands would be closer to Southern in this case)

Northern dialects tend to be more conservative IIRC (in medieval English anyway)

PuppyMonkey · 30/06/2008 13:09

I'm in the Midlands too - i say draws and ion. I don't understand this thread!

Flier · 30/06/2008 13:17

thankyou prettybird, was beginning to think I was going slightly mad here!

OP posts:
Deux · 30/06/2008 13:49

Flier, you're not going mad. I'm Scottish and could never get draws from drawers as I pronounce it as draw-rz.

Equally could never get ion from iron as pronounce it as eye-(u)rn!

Do you say 'amn't I?' too? My favourite.

Botbot · 30/06/2008 13:52

Draws and drawers sound the same in my accent

[winks at ChasingSquirrels, who I assume has the same accent as me]

Iklboo · 30/06/2008 13:52

My folks say 'book', 'cook' 'look' to rhyme with fluke (if you know what I mean)
I say draws but spell it drawers.
I might say drawers to mean artists if it didn't sound so awful!

prettybird · 30/06/2008 13:53

Foun this:

"The linguistic term that is used to describe speech problems related to the consonant r is rhotacism. According to Wikipedia, English speakers fall into two distinct groups based upon their pronunciation of the letter ?r.? Rhotic speakers pronounce their ?r?s? always, while non-rhotic speakers pronounce their ?r?s? only when they are followed by a vowel. "

So that's the rs explained.

What about aspirated and non aspirated whs.... as in, it is obvious "Which witch is which" as the two words are pronounced differently!

Flier · 30/06/2008 13:54

thanks deux I catch myself saying amn't I, and only recently "discovered" that I actually say it

OP posts:
Flier · 30/06/2008 13:55

hmm, interesting prettybird, thanks for that.

OP posts:
egypt · 30/06/2008 14:01

deux, your post makes sense. if i say drawers and iron in a scottish accent it does indeed come out as draw-rz and eye-(u)rn

but, i'm from norfolk and say drawers as draws and iron as eye-un

def a regional thing

i can't even SAY draw-ing without pausing between the 2 syllables.. how the heck do you go from 'or' to 'ing' without sounding like a donkey?

ChasingSquirrels · 30/06/2008 14:17

glad it wasn't just me then!

Bridie3 · 30/06/2008 14:26

Draws and ion for me.

Ellbell · 30/06/2008 14:29

Isn't 'iron' pronounced like 'I earn'? That's how I say it.

But in answer to OP, I say 'draws' but write 'drawers'.

Flier · 30/06/2008 14:32

well ellbell, at least you spell it correctly, its quite often spelled "draws", which is what prompted my op. I didn't actually realise that it was pronounced draws and ions by people.

OP posts:
mrsbabookaloo · 30/06/2008 14:47

Flier: I totally understand your irritation at people SPELLING it "draws"... but come on, everyone in England pronounces it "draws"..! You must have noticed that your accent is different from ours, if you've ever been to England or even watched TV!

mrsbabookaloo · 30/06/2008 14:47

..Sorry, read that with surprised tone rather than a narky one... didn't mean to be agressive!

Flier · 30/06/2008 14:58

I have honestly never, ever been aware of english people pronouncing both of the words mentioned in that way.

OP posts:
prettybird · 30/06/2008 15:11

Not everyone in England pronounces it without the "r"s.
