"And low they arrive home.....".
I wonder if they said High!

Glad I wasn't the only one who winced at that thread title today!

QueenCamillaMW · 29/08/2026 18:24

That one jumped out at me as well. 😆

AppleButterGutter · 29/08/2026 18:30

I've just spotted "to've" in a thread title as well. I suppose it is marginally better than "to of" but not by much

Surely they said 'Moo'...

I quite like that. Language evolves. To’ve is an evolution, not a cringeworthy error.

Excellent! 👏

The recent thread title with low in it was a typo. I read a bit because I didn't understand the title.

" Language evolves." is always trotted out on here to excuse some erosion of English.

AppleButterGutter · 30/08/2026 13:25

@PleasantPedant

How do you know it was a typo - did the OP come back and correct it? I cba to recheck the thread.

BanjoKnickers · 30/08/2026 13:29

Synonymous with "wallah".

Not clear. She said “oops” when the error was pointed out but that could mean that it was a typo or could mean that she didn’t know the correct word.

PleasantPedant · 30/08/2026 13:35

@AppleButterGutter , went and checked and pp is correct. Not a typo but the OP herself was corrected early on.

In this case it’s appropriate.

I’ve eaten supper.
She could’ve eaten supper, it was ready.
Was I wrong to’ve eaten supper?

‘ve is an acceptable contraction of have with a 1st person pronoun, why not allow the evolution to combining it with other parts of speech that go with have? The meaning does not change.

That works though because the apostrophe replaces ha.
