That takes me back to when I was having my house renovated. Coffee break with a couple of the tradesmen and one of them came out with "self-defecating" 😁

It was so strange to hear from someone who uses language for their living! Books/ podcasts etc. No one has ever pointed it out to him?!

Pretty sure both deprecating and depreciating are correct.

Self-depreciating: Comes from the root depreciate, which means to lose or lower financial value. While strict traditionalists once argued this was the only logical form (meaning "undervaluing oneself"), it is now largely viewed as outdated or a lesser-used variant
