Pedants' corner

"Assistance dogs only"

I've noticed signs in the grounds of several National Trust properties recently saying "Assistance dogs only".

Such a shame that humans aren't allowed to enjoy the lovely grounds 😪

PSA: this is posted in Pedants' corner and is a thread about a signpost. I know what the sign meant but the way it was worded amused me. It is not a thread about dogs or about accessibility.

Haha, like the old observation about the London Underground signs saying "Dogs must be carried on the escalator" - and people who didn't have a dog with them at all worrying that they therefore weren't allowed to use them!

I'm a right old pedant and probably need therapy because every time someone starts a thread with, e.g., "Has anyone been to Morocco?" I'm shouting in my head "Yes many people have been to Morocco and some people live there too!"
I hope it's not only me...

A dental surgery where I was once a patient, had a sign at the entrance which said
“Patient’s Parking”. I asked if they only had one. They weren’t amused.

I love pendants' corner. Really calms me down when I find like minded people

we seem to have a problem with speeding hedgehogs in my neighbourhood 😬

Oh why did they get rid of the laughing emoji? You'll just have to imagine I sent you one @Legomum789

Pistachiocake · 25/08/2026 17:05

Well, have you seen the way some people behave? Maybe they only want dogs?

OhIHaveACopy · 25/08/2026 17:11

There is a pub next to us that we call the Guide Dog because there is a sign on the door saying ‘Guide Dogs only’. There is always much hilarity when we go and try to ‘sneak in’ by wearing bright yellow jackets or booking a table under the name of Rex.

"Doors are alarmed" nervous doors in Morrisons

I also have issue with signs on taxis saying "advanced booking necessary" rather than "booking in advance necessary ". That one might be controversial.

And small children must be carried!

I've interpreted that as, slow hedgehogs need to drive carefully but hedgehogs going at any other speed don't need to drive carefully.
