I keep trying to imagine it. It makes my eyes water!

I just get League of Gentlemen."We are Legs Akimbo theatre group" If ever we had such visitors at school the older of us teachers always referred to them like that.

SchnitzelAgain · 07/08/2026 08:34

Doesn’t it just mean spread apart, probably bent at the knees?

Keroppi · 07/08/2026 08:38

It means like you're in a smear or internal exam position
Legs wide open knees bent
In yoga it's reclining bound angle pose

It just means legs apart/ splayed, doesn't it?

Is the pedantry around this that you don’t need “legs” in front of “akimbo”? Rather than the word “akimbo” itself?

MyThreeWords · 20/09/2026 19:50

Are you particularly inflexible OP? I suppose that is in the nature of pedantry, to be fair.

Do you mean 'akimbo akimbo'?

What other things can be akimbo? Arms akimbo? Shoulders? Fingers? Watching some men on the tube, it feels as if they may have testicles akimbo

MyThreeWords · 21/09/2026 16:22

I'm still intrigued to know what the pedantry point is here. It isn't tautologous to include 'legs', since arms can be akimbo too. So what is the problem that the OP is gesturing at?

I also added on “Theatre Company” when I read the title. League of Gentlemen is all I think of when I see that phrase.

I’ve only ever heard of arms being akimbo. The etymology suggests that it should really only be applied to sharply bent limbs. I suppose a squat with feet in a plié or demi plié might be ok but that’s a far less common pose.
