Dear Pedants,

Could you please advise as to whether there is an apostrophe in Sports Day? I'm tying myself in knots over this and have to write a letter to parents!

I'm going out to collect ds soon then on to college, so won't be back on until late tonight. I'm not a troll, honestly!

Many thanks!

No apostrophe. It's a plural - more than one sport is played - not an a possessive. Forget about the 's' and think of things like flag day, mufti day, pancake day. You wouldn't dream of trying to cram an apostrophe in.

Not a possessive, of course, rather than not "an a possessive". Sorry for typo.

yep, agree with AFD.

The day doesn't belong to the sport, and there are no missing letters, so there is no apostrophe required.

Thank you. Sports Day it is then!
