Can I just state for the record that gloves should not be worn for
eating
drinking
smoking
playing cards
and much, much more.
This is a pedantic point since many (period) series/films show women wearing gloves at formal occasions but also show them drinking & eating whilst wearing them!!
From photos I see that the late QEII wore hers but I also see that most of the ladies do not.
If you have worn long loves, you know that they have buttons at the wrist so that you can remove the hand part and tuck it into the arm, leaving your hands free for eating and drinking.

We're all thinking it, about bloody time someone had the guts to say it!

This made me laugh more than I can tell you.

As I said at the outset, this is a pedantic point. It is trivial. With all respect, @didntlikeanyofthesuggestions , I'm sure no one even notices. There is much more going on in the world but I am sad that this little detail, easy to avoid, is usually wrong.

I always thought that the buttons were to allow the wide part of the hand to get past the narrow wrist of the glove when putting them on (and taking them off)

@Emptyandsad , that could be an additional function but mainly, the mousquetaire, is to allow ladies' hands out for eating/drinking.

And, ahem, other functions.

It happened to be mentioned in a Ngaio Marsh book I've just been re-reading.
