Seems like people are using this word instead of cringey. When did this start happening? "oh it's so cringe" is just so wrong IMO.

Sounds fine to me

Okayfenokay · 13/01/2026 14:02

It's a verb! I cringe when I see people using it incorrectly on Mumsnet.

I'm chill about it

MylipstickiscalledHugMe · 13/01/2026 20:40

It's not that deep, lil bro

(sorry! My ds13 says this to me)

Fifthtimelucky · 15/01/2026 08:16

I agree with you, OP, though I prefer “cringeworthy” to “cringey”!

EnchantingDaylight · 15/01/2026 08:22

I used to cringe at this, I first started noticing it a couple of years ago but I’ve got used to it now and cringey / cringeworthy sound a bit dated. I know it’s a verb but, well, things change. Don’t get me started on invite used to mean invitation though.

upinaballoon · 15/01/2026 13:15

It's a shame not to use adverbs.

Or "gift" to mean "give" or "given".

Yes, that as well. Grrr.

I'm sure we used 'cringe' when I was at school in the 1960s.

Did you use it as a verb or as an adjective or both?

Both I think but it was a long time ago.
