Hello, my son's girlfriend of ten years plus writes thank you as 'thankyou'. She has also used 'gotten' lately.

Would you correct her?

I've seen tributes to Chris Rea saying they loved Drivving home for Christmas.

And where has ‘noone’ come from??

Since when was it one word?

I sometimes have to look 'no one' up, just to double-check it's not hyphenated (though I can see it's not one word just by looking). Just now I have seen "I had no where else to go" and "with no where to go" on the same thread by different people.

Seen a post on here about ‘edging your bets’

I saw that. Made me smile. I guess it must be a confusion with ‘having an edge’, in the sense of a small advantage.

I remind myself that I spent most of my life saying “you have another thing coming”, so I try not to be too judgey about language. It’s hard sometimes though.

Salome61 · 01/01/2026 23:11

Is it 'hedging my bets' or it that an old saying I've remembered? Thanks so much for all the advice I am not going to say or do anything.

I hope you can make the changes you want to and enjoy good times in 2026 - I am trying to have more fun this year :)

Years ago there was a long and comprehensive thread on here about "have another thing coming" vs "have another think coming". It was about 50:50 on which is correct.

I'm on team "think coming".

(edited for a humiliating typo)

I am still thinking about Denizenofshame’s comment about ‘illiterate’. ☹️

When she starts writing chestadraws that's the time to disown her.

I suppose the think could be the thing, to make sense for those who get it wrong?

It's think.

I love gotten. Love that an old word that fell out of use is coming back.

SnowFrogJelly · 02/01/2026 23:03

I hate 'gotten' too. It may be archaic but it sounds new-fangled to me.

I'll just go off and do me. whatever that means

Gotten was English, it was taken by the British to America where it persists but evolved to 'got' in the UK, (it lives on here in forgotten, misbegotten etc). gotten isn't wrong, just archaic.

Yes.
Like, ‘Ill-gotten gains.’
