Pedants' corner

Flouting their wealth and Flaunting the rules!

People seem to have no idea what these near-homophonic verbs mean these days, do they, but somehow they reliably choose the wrong one...

Oh, flaunting was everywhere in Covid. Lots of enraged people
on SM when others were ‘flaunting’ the rules. 😖

Waitingfordoggo · 31/10/2025 22:22

Slight tangent, but I also keep seeing ‘balling my eyes out’, which I just can’t cope with.

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 31/10/2025 22:25

They probably mix up choose and chose. No doubt the same with loose and lose.

Terrytheweasel · 31/10/2025 22:27

Or Squash instead of Quash!

BrickBiscuit · 01/11/2025 12:02

I read someone say 'rein it in' today, and thought to myself: 'that looks wrong - yet another one who doesn't know the right word.' Then I realised it's correct. I've seen 'reign' for 'rein' so many times now, it's making me doubt my own instincts. Whatever will happen next? I could of wept.

Someone wrote about pedalling their ideas. Nothing to do with bikes.

I’m sure we’ll see Christmas bobbles before long too.

I would class myself as highly literate but I know enough to know that affect and effect mean different things and I almost always look them up to double check which one I need to use.

It boils my piss when people use the wrong one!

MrsDoylesLastTeabag · 01/11/2025 17:30

It's true that during the lockdown there was an AWFUL lot of "rule-flaunting" being called out on here. Neighbours taking several walks a day and including unnecessary items in their shopping. Like milk. 😆

Amused by "Christmas bobbles". I haven't come upon that one before.

I haven’t seen ‘Christmas bobbles’ but have seen ‘ballballs’ 🤨

Seymour5 · 02/11/2025 20:28

Love ‘ballballs’! 😅

ThePoshUns · 02/11/2025 21:30

I need some rest-bite from such bad grammar!

And even ‘bawbaws’

Waitingfordoggo · 02/11/2025 22:10

😂 @Borgonzola Just makes me think of ‘bawbags’.

You would get double points if you typed grammer.
I had to override autocorrect to do that.

Somethingtosayagain · 03/11/2025 08:25

I have been known to go out of my way to (correctly) use effect as a verb just so Microsoft (and in the past, dull teachers) would try to pick me up on it.

dreamiesformolly · 03/11/2025 09:42

I'm in an amateur theatre group and a fellow member got around this dilemma in a recent show by saying 'flounting'. Every single performance. 😆

(The script, correctly, said 'flouting'.)

It was funny, every time he said it his face did this thing like he knew it was wrong but hadn't been able to remember if it was 'flouting' or 'flaunting'. 😄
