People seem to have no idea what these near-homophonic verbs mean these days, do they, but somehow they reliably choose the wrong one...

Oh, flaunting was everywhere in Covid. Lots of enraged people
on SM when others were ‘flaunting’ the rules. 😖

Slight tangent, but I also keep seeing ‘balling my eyes out’, which I just can’t cope with.

They probably mix up choose and chose. No doubt the same with loose and lose.

Or Squash instead of Quash!

I read someone say 'rein it in' today, and thought to myself: 'that looks wrong - yet another one who doesn't know the right word.' Then I realised it's correct. I've seen 'reign' for 'rein' so many times now, it's making me doubt my own instincts. Whatever will happen next? I could of wept.

Someone wrote about pedalling their ideas. Nothing to do with bikes.

It's true that during the lockdown there was an AWFUL lot of "rule-flaunting" being called out on here. Neighbours taking several walks a day and including unnecessary items in their shopping. Like milk. 😆

I had to override autocorrect to do that.

I have been known to go out of my way to (correctly) use effect as a verb just so Microsoft (and in the past, dull teachers) would try to pick me up on it.

I'm in an amateur theatre group and a fellow member got around this dilemma in a recent show by saying 'flounting'. Every single performance. 😆

(The script, correctly, said 'flouting'.)

It was funny, every time he said it his face did this thing like he knew it was wrong but hadn't been able to remember if it was 'flouting' or 'flaunting'. 😄
