I need a five-letter word which epitomises, encapsulates or complements the motto 'In arduis fidelis'. It's to accompany a crest on a display. Anyone? Thanks.

Loyal?

Tricky to do in five letters. Stout?

BrickBiscuit · 19/10/2025 14:37

@Dee00 @GasperyJacquesRoberts Great start, thanks. Keep them coming. I'm sure there's something out there, the more left-field the better.

Chat GPT says
Here are a few strong candidates:

  1. Stead – as in steadfast, meaning firm and unwavering. (Though technically four letters, it has the right root and resonance.)
  2. Brave – conveys courage in adversity, a close complement.
  3. Loyal – directly expresses fidelis (faithful).
  4. Trust – faith and reliability, another complement to fidelis.
  5. Tried – as in “tested and true,” implying proven faithfulness in hardship.
Best single choice: LOYAL

I'm not sure you can do any better with a single five letter word. Could you display two five letter words one above the other?

Gutsy? Tough? Depending how left field you're willing to go.

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 19/10/2025 15:41

Mercy?

Planck · 19/10/2025 15:41

Stout, tough, loyal, sworn?
Pluck, heart, nerve, steel?

Could you put the motto in English - “faithful in adversity” and the Latin “fidus” meaning loyal in Latin below.
