Why can’t people say what they mean? Do they mean the period where people tried not to spread it? Do they mean the period before vaccines? Do they mean now? Do they mean lockdowns? Do they mean the period when it was a PHEIC?

I think you're being unreasonable here, I'm afraid. Everyone knows what is meant by "during covid". It's not a precise term but it conveys what it needs to and is well understood by most people

There seem to me to have been a lot of different stages during the Covid crisis and I don't think I can remember them all. I remember a time when the World Health Organisation said we didn't need to wear masks but that changed after a while. I can't remember what was running along with that. So I am inclined to use the terms 'before Covid', 'after Covid' and 'during Covid' in a rather loose way.

It means different things to different people though. Some people were using it in 2020. There are so many people with covid at the moment, so what does “after covid” mean?

Good question😀. I suppose I think that when schools and churches re-opened that was the end of it but it wasn't at all! I'm in a knot.

Fgs it’s pretty clear.

'After covid' means after the point at which covid stopped being a significant factor affecting the general population's decision-making and the government's legislative programme.

In my humble opinion

I actually used 'during covid' in a work email I sent to a colleague the other day. The receipient would have known exactly which time period it related to.
