Upping

Wanting assurance that I’m not the only person enraged by the constant use of ‘upping’ instead of ‘increasing’. Examples being ‘he says I should be upping my hours’, or ‘I’ve been upping my protein’. Obviously ‘up’, ‘upped’ and ‘increase’ and ‘increased’ all part of the same wor.

Yep, one of my irrational pet hates! I was thinking this earlier when my MIL was talking about making sure FIL ups his fluid intake. Very irritating. Glad I'm not alone! 😂

Swan upping was a couple of months ago.
Upping the ante has been in use for a long time.

Upping the ante perfectly permissible.

As is swan upping.

Yes, but not in this context. It shouldn’t be ‘swan increasing’ should it, it’s the actual title of the activity. So agreed, fully permissible but not in keeping with the theme.

'Up' isnt the verb in 'swan up'; 'swan' is, obviously. So one doesn't go swan upping, one goes swanning up

Swan upping is the annual counting of swans on stretches of the Thames. They also do health checks at the same time I believe.

One would definitely go swan upping. One could obviously swan up to the swan upping, but it's not the same :-)

To swan is a verb but it's not a verb in swan upping.
