So bad, it's good. From a post today:

"I am constantly baffled by the facebook finominon"

Wooo Hooo!

Do-doo-do-do-do finominon do-do-do-do!

wilbur · 02/06/2008 22:54

Hunker That's EXACTLY what went through my mind. I couldn't work out how to write it though.

Do you realise you are taking the piss out of someone who is seriously visually impaired and uses a computer programme for typing, which sometimes makes spelling mistakes?

BarcodeZebra · 02/06/2008 23:19

I realise that I was delighted by this spelling error in an entirely un-malicious way.

If I've caused offence I'm very sorry. But it's still a glorious mistake regardless of it's provenance.

MAJOR points to Barcode for the use of "provenance". Have spent two years trying to embroider this into a post. Well Done!!

I just have to say.

I dont understand the whole pedantic finonimon.

Is it just a deep seated need to feel superior over any petty little thing?

I hate reading posts that seem really illiterate. And I cant spell for shit as I have often said. Sometimes I care about my spelling and then I make the extra effort but if I agonised over every little thing I posted on MN I would never see my child or husband. I really just have better things to do. Also I have a mixed culture thing going on and can never remember who spells what a certain way.

May I also point out that possibly the most loved person on MN is cod who cant type to save her life. Why dont you pick on her? Because she is too cool I guess you know there is no point.

Look I think some people here are idiots. And I roll my eyes at text speak etc. But really. What is this need to spell check everyone?? It seems so smug and petty. Sorry. I just hate this terror that has come over MN where everyone is constantly apologising for their spelling and grammar mistakes before anyone else can point them out. We are in theory supposed to be like a sort of friend to each other arent we?

QuintessentialShadows · 02/06/2008 23:47

oh this is just so bad form.

Imagine me with one of these big finger gloves you see on boxing matches (I imagine) pointing DOWN, shouting Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu. (Just lowering my imagination to the level of this thread)

Pan · 02/06/2008 23:47

toujours!!

overthehill · 02/06/2008 23:48

Surely it's FAR worse not being able to get the right sort of 'its' than mis-spelling phenomenon???

Pan · 02/06/2008 23:49

eenybeeny - it's fun in PC, that's all.

eenybeeny · 02/06/2008 23:51

my mum was an english teacher. I spent my whole life being taught proper grammar. I know it. I am just lazy when I type. I type too much to do it all perfectly. I often dont use capital letters either. Just cant be bothered sometimes.

overthehill · 02/06/2008 23:53

Especially when the person who gets 'its' wrong is sending up the one who's struggling with 'phenomenon'..."Let (s)he who is without sin cast the first stone" and all that...

Pan · 02/06/2008 23:55

tbh, pedantic people people are taking the piss out of themselves primarily, for being so snotty at detecting errors. It's self-deprecation ulimately.

Pan · 02/06/2008 23:58

and cod isn't the most loved person on MN at all. That's me, btw, though her typos sometimes infect my typing as well.

and Barcode did make an apology, tbf.

eenybeeny · 02/06/2008 23:58

I am pedantic sometimes. and when i am it is not self deprecation. its superiority. I accept this as a part of who i am. I dont understand the angle that it is self deprecation.

eenybeeny · 03/06/2008 00:02

well if we took a vote more people would know who cod was than you! sorry its true. not that I dont love you. my point was not who was the most loved it was that you are not picking on her. Why is she above it?

barcode made a very half hearted apology really. I do not know barcode or have any reason to think badly of the OP just think it was not a very sincere apology. The person is blind fgs.

eenybeeny · 03/06/2008 00:03

eeny - I doubt if most people who post here do so out of a sense of superiority at all. It's a game. i.e. "are so sooo clever/pretentious that you saw that error and bothered to point it up?" That sort of thing. No malice to anyone intended as Barcode indicates. It's very British, imho.

harpomarx · 03/06/2008 00:04

I don't think it is self-deprecation. My dad is a pedant and gets genuinely angry a la Victor Meldrew about apostrophe misuse etc.

I agree though that 'finominon' is great. I thought it was a mn-ism to be honest.

I vote that it should be, cos it is a much better spelling.
