Wondering about wandering

Has anyone noticed that people are using wondering instead of wandering these days? It's so irritating. I've even heard it from journalists and in podcasts and audiobooks. It's mad.

I've only just realised in the last couple of tears that people don't understand bought and brought are different words.

Good grief. 🙈

How many tears have you shed over it?

Haha...well, true to form for this corner of MN. Apologies for the autocorrect error I did not notice.

Zero tears, thank you 😁

Some mistakes are understandable, but I don't think confusing bought and brought is. How can anyone not know the difference?
I've noticed the wondering/wandering thing cropping up everywhere too.

I agree about wondering and wandering, it irritates me too.
I was wondering around the shop.. Noooooo, you were wandering around the shop.

Couldn't resist, @Windywuss .Smile
There are two issues IMO. One is poor enunciation, and the other is the complete lack of interest people have in language.

I might read 'I was wondering about the shopping centre, ...' before realising that they meant wandering.

Glad it's not just me. I was listening to Jonathan Hari's audiobook and it was driving me a bit mad

Did you mean Johann Hari?

Pedant5corner · 06/09/2025 14:21

Sorry, it's probably an autocorrection, but it is Pedants' corner.Smile

Hahaha ...nah, that one is my bad memory/menopause brain 😁

Ironically...it was his book "Stolen Focus" 😆

I will never understand how anyone could confuse the words brought and bought.

HonoriaBulstrode · 06/09/2025 19:02

Weary and wary are another two that are frequently confused.

Seymour5 · 10/09/2025 14:20

Were and where. We where going out. No you weren't. They don't sound remotely alike, so due to my automatic word recognition machine (my ancient brain) I immediately hear where instead of were which spoils the meaning of what I'm reading.

Tempted to ask 'where where you going?"
