"Sided"?

Can someone explain this (from The Island at the Center of the World, about the colonizing of America):

The leader of New Sweden now was Johan Printz, a great hog of a man whose four-hundred-pound body, as it lumbered within the palisades of his central fort, was less dressed than sided in the armor of the Swedish military.

I'm wondering if there's a connection with something like the phrase "a side of beef."

Siding can mean the exterior cladding on buildings I think. Could it be something to do with that?
