Me and my

Is anyone else put off reading posts that start with ‘Me and my (partner/ friend/ neighbour etc) rather than ‘My (partner/friend/neighbour)? Even worse, starting ‘Myself and my whatever’.

I left school at 15, with a pretty basic education, but I instinctively know not to start a sentence like that. Sorry, just wanted to get it off my chest.

The "myself and..." thing is definitely worse!

I actually don’t mind “me” used in the wrong place as much as I can’t stand “myself” or “I” used in the wrong place.

“Me and John are going” for some reason doesn’t grate on me like “are you coming with John and I” which makes me want to throw punches.

As does “if you could send it to myself”

I used to have a manager who really seemed to think that because it’s a longer word, it makes you seem smarter. “If yourself could send that over to myself once it’s done”.

An old work friend was taught that you 'think how you would say it for each one separately and then put them together'. Oh, how I wish the BBC and the ITV were forced by law to have a 5 minute English lesson on TV before the News programmes.
As well as the I/me/myself mistakes there are the her and she ones. A friend says, "Her and her brother went to Bristol", and I want to say, " No, she went to Bristol and her brother went to Bristol so she and her brother went to Bristol", but I don't say anything.
Dare I float a grammar lesson on Mumsnet Chat? Dare you? Smiley emoji.

I don't like it, @Seymour5 , but it doesn't annoy me as much as 'Myself and ...' or '“are you coming with John and I” .

Fuckish · 02/09/2025 08:36

It doesn’t bother me anywhere near as much as ‘That would be myself, Lord Sugar’ or hyper-correcting to ‘She invited John and I to her wedding’.

All of the above!
