Many many years ago as an undergraduate I gave a presentation on prostate cancer. But said prostrate throughout the whole thing, I was very embarassed when my supervisor told me but never did it again.

I think pedantry has its place and it is not when someone is telling you about their cancer. Nor is it appropriate to post it as a funny incident on the internet

DH has prostate cancer, it’s slow growing, not currently life threatening and a lot of older men develop it. I’m with the OP, when anyone pronounces it as ‘prostrate’ it gives me the mental image of someone face down on the floor. Of course, if someone has it, or a loved one has it, I wouldn’t correct them.

Oh lord have I been saying it wrong? I’m mentally trying to think how many times I’ve ever used that word and wondering if I’ve mispronounced it.

Did they not listen when the doctor tested them and then gave them their diagnosis? So many people call it a prostrate.

I think people think they know a word, and when they hear the correct pronunciation they either don’t notice it’s different or think it’s wrong. Prostate and prostrate are so similar, it shouldn’t annoy, but it does. At least none of the medical staff DH sees mispronounces it.
