Why do people say they ‘do’ a country or destination?

Not sure whether this is actually pedantry or just something that irritates me.

In my mind you visit or go somewhere rather than doing it. It makes it sound slightly dismissive and that you are ticking things off a list.

I have never heard this.

I've heard this, it always sounds really pretentious and overstated to me. 'Oh no I've already done Mexico' - no you haven't, you just went to Cancun for a week.
